Summer improvements
When the summer time arrives, the majority of people opts to ‘migrate’ to cooler environments, take a little bit of free time, relax,... But in Iwith.org we have a tradition: a bunch of crazy programmers lock ourselves out with no phone, no email, and no distractions, and we star to implement, enhance and design enhancements and services for the Ab•core platform.
That’s how “La Plataforma” was born, on summer 2001, and, since then, each year we repeat the tradition, and on these dates we try to do enhancements and changes that, during the year, because of work, professional life or simply because of lack of time, we are not able to do.
This summer we are working on the user management interface’s design, and adding the concept of extranet user. If you are interesting in knowing what is this, keep reading...
This year’s objective was clear: we wanted to offer the organizations a tool to create a database for registered users. Users that won’t be part of the organization, but who will have some privileges that anonymous users won’t have. To do this, we have to modify the way Ab•Core users are organized internally and add more functionality.
• The first functionality is to be able to define a user profile ‘free’. Yes, yes, free, that is, that each organization can define what it is that they want for their users to include in their profile. For example, a picture, their studies, or the number of coffees they have per day.
This information in the future is going to be used for a service we are starting to work in, that will allow us to show graphically the working groups and people included on them, with their profile, their CV, or whatever the organization wants to include.
• Another functionality that has been developed is to allow users to register themselves, even though this is optional for the organizations that want so. Once registered, we can control the acceptation manually or through an automatic process.
What can registered users do?
Mainly, they can access the information that anonymous users can’t. For example, they will not have to enter CAPTCHA, the famous ANTISPAM filter, when they are adding a comment.
When talking about services like News, Events, Links, Quotes and Homepage, they have been adapted to define their contents as PRIVATE or PUBLIC. Therefore, when were are going to create some new/event/link/quote, we will be asked if it is for registered users only, or for all kind of users. For the Homepage service, there is a completely different web available for registered users.
And what now?
Summer is not over, and in Iwith.org there’s still a lot of work to be done. The enhancement published today is just a draft, to which we will have to add functionality that will allow us to further develop this changes. If you want to know more about this options and how to activate them for your organization, you only have to contact us.
