Latest Improvement of the Ab�core platform: a step forward in security and access to information

The past days have been very intense, specially as for functional improvements, which at first sight are hard to identify, but have a positive result from a technical point of view.
From one side we have been busy enhancing the Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) of the data base. The HAL is a group of functionalities that allow programmers to access clear and easily the database of the operative systems. Therefore, it is very critical, as most of the applications draw upon the database for some information. With this improvement, we get to reduce in a significant way the response time in most of the accesses to the database.

Another task that kept us busy was security. We have added a CAPTCHA control in the Forum service, as it was being exploited by some organizations to upload undesired adverts, with the resultant image problems for the organization, but also for the rest as they were consuming considerable resources from the system.

In the coming days we keep working to refine improvements in the abstraction layer, and keep monitoring the servers.

The iwith.org Campus changes to the 1.8.4+ version of Moodle

The campus migrated over the weekend to the moodle 1.8.4+ version. This version does not have any new functions but is does fix some bugs and, more than anything solves some security errors that had been detected.

Communication, or the possibility of sending e-mails, but in a personalized manner

There are many that have commented to us having the problem of sending a message to a certain number of users, friends and collaborators in the electronic mail form. Above all, because our interest was to send personalized e-mails and also require a completed distribution list or a newsletter. In order to make this easier, we have added a new service function in our e-mail that allows us to send messages to a specific group of interest.

Important improvements on the Homepage

This week we have published an innovation that solves some minor failures, while introduces some enhancements as detailed below:

Homepage:

• Now this service is called Webpages, as we think this better matches with what the service is offering at present.

WebPages and Metatags:

• It allows defining Metatags for the redirection page. Usually, the redirection page sends the user to another page depending on the language or some other parameters. Search engines such as Google do see this page but so far it couldn’t be indexed because it wouldn’t have any content. We have added an option to insert metatags and define the text and links that the search engines will collect to enhance the indexation of the web site; this is, to make it easier to be selected by Google when related searches are run. It can be configured from: Services Setup -> WebPages -> Preferences.

Forms:

• Customfields such as country and UN delegations can now be defined as mandatory.

Sitemaps:

• Optimization of the URLs to be sent to Google. Elimination of external URLs that Google world not consider and therefore, would not help the web to be selected by the search engines.

News:

• A link has been added at the News service home to visualize the news in every language (not only the navigation language)
• Navigation by sections works correctly again.

New functionality: RSS Feed Injector

Over past weekend we have added a new functionality to the News service; the RSS feed Injector.
This functionality help us define data flows that automatically will add news to our categories.

The processor interprets the news feeds, but also podcasts, videocasts and photo flows. We have successfully tested it already with sites such as Digg, Del.icio.us, Flikr.com or BBC.

A more accessible service from Stakeholders.

In a meeting held with the Catalan Association of the Blind and Partially Sighted, some improvements and changes were mentioned that should be changed by the Ab�Core platform in order for people with visual disabilities to be able to access it.

We are including some of the recommendations in the patch this week. The Stakeholders service is now offering an alternative text to the visuals.

Today's patch also incorporates other improvements and corrections to minor glitches in services like news and events.

Thank you to all who collaborated their ideas and proposals to help make Ab.Core an even better tool.

Below there is a summary of the projects we have worked on during the month of September:

Many enhancements and new functionality on the Extranet, that will soon be ready to be open to the public .
Enhancements and bug fixing on the Pager interface that manages the data lists from the Administration.
New kind of control and statistics management. Now the News, Newsletter and Stakeholders services, and next the other services that use the same tool to calculate the number of people that visit an article, and also to view graphically this results. The efficiency of the data base containing the log information is also enhanced.
SocialBookmarking service added to all the Ab�Core services.
The comments management interface has been re-designed.
The comments tool has been added to the Event service.

We hope that we will be able to tell you more news soon.

The Webmail and its editor WYSIWYG change their look

Those of you who use the Webmail as a daily work tool will have already realized that we have installed a new version, similar to the web2.0 applications, so that your mail has a more friendly and tidy look now.
However the old webmail is still available, you just have to click the link Old Webmail at the heading.

Obviously, from the old webmail you can go back to the new one clicking the link Ajax Webmail.

If you want to have one of the two by default, you can set it up following route:
Admin -> Services Setup -> Webmail -> Preferences.

Along the installation process we have put a copy of the Address Book in the new system, so that you can keep in touch with your contacts without having to make a new one; however, bear in mind that they are separated systems and if you choose a contact in one of the address books, it won’t show in the other.

We have also updated the WYSIWYG editor with the last version of � FCKeditor 2.4.3.� The WYSIWYG editor allows to write a text and see at the same time its design when it is published and the FCK editor is one of the best word editors for webs that allows to use programmes like Word in our sites.

In short, this new version includes improvements, solves security problems and provides more stability.

Forms Updated

We have just presented an innovation featuring enhanced layout and control for our forms service. This innovation is meant to correct some mistakes on the previous version.

In this new version, you can decide -for each user- whether or not to send a confirmation of the information received by e-mail. For this, is it essential to have the surfer's e-mail address.

Many of these innovations are introduced by our dear friend Evan Silverman at UnitarNY.

When the summer time arrives, the majority of people opts to ‘migrate’ to cooler environments, take a little bit of free time, relax,... But in Iwith.org we have a tradition: a bunch of crazy programmers lock ourselves out with no phone, no email, and no distractions, and we star to implement, enhance and design enhancements and services for the Ab•core platform.
That’s how “La Plataforma” was born, on summer 2001, and, since then, each year we repeat the tradition, and on these dates we try to do enhancements and changes that, during the year, because of work, professional life or simply because of lack of time, we are not able to do.

Optimization of service: news, links and forms

News: We are planning a series of improvements for the news service, such as adding a TagCloud, permitting users' comments, or activating users' contributions in the form of news.

But before putting these improvements into practice, we thought we should 'rejuvenate' the oldest service of the Ab�Core platform. Basically the code has been reorganized to make it clearer and more accessible. In addition to resolving some other minor problems, we've also begun to use a new model of microtemplates which will allow organizations to model, if they wish, every detail of the service.

We've also incorporated some improvements in the snippets, such as the possibility of being able to define the target in the links.

Links: In the links service, we have added the possibility to define the footer of the categories, as well as their identifier, to make navigation simpler and more compatible with search engines such as Google. The code has also been converted to make use of microtemplates thus allowing the user to customize the service.

Forms: We have added the type "Select Custom Pulldown - Bulk" which allows the creations of pulldown menus from a list of text. This option is recommended where there are long lists that require no translation, such as the names of countries. Since it's a text box we can use 'copy & paste', although we lose the possibility of controlling the translations of the entries.

New forms service

One of the requirements most demanded by organisations in the ICT area is the availability of a system that helps them collect data from friends, internet users and general users.

For these organisations, it is often a case of collecting data in order to have more information on the status of a specific issue within a community or to carry out a collection of signatures for a particular campaign or simply to gather the personal details of those who contact them. All in all, it is a mixture of different situations that result in a system displaying a web form that can somehow collect the data.

Snippets in Ajax

A new version of the Ab�core platform has been published that will change the functionality of snippets and, in the majority of cases, will allow the use of the latest technologies such as AJAX. This takes into account the many organizations that use snippets and cannot cease to use or have had to use them up until now for compatibility.

Stakeholder Statistics

A counter displaying the amount of times a stakeholder logo is shown has been incorporated, as well as the number of times our visitors decide to click on our stakeholders’ logos.

With this data we are able to provide detailed information for each stakeholder as to the number of printings, number of clicks, click-through or ratio between clicks and printings which is displayed as a percentage. This data is shown in summarized form in the administration section, where we manage the stakeholders by identifier. If we click on the data, we can
access a more detailed view, divided by language, with information on the results of the current month (M-0), preceding month (M-1) and the previous month (M-2), as well as the historical totals (T).

We have also added a new snippet in the stakeholders section that will allow us to show the logo of a stakeholder and at the same time control the printing and the amount of clicks over it.

Improvements to the News and Events service

We have improved the News and Events service.

From now on the News service:

Will allow you to see the name and e-mail address of an article’s translator, as well as the date it was translated. The configuration of this service controls which parameters are visible when a user reads an article.

This solves the management, arrangement and viewing problems of the translated articles which previously arose from inconsecutively translated articles in one day. Articles and their translations are now grouped and ordered daily from the most recent to the oldest.

About the Events service:

Just like the news service, the management, arrangement and viewing problems of the translated events, which arose from inconsecutively translated events in one day, has been solved. Events and their translations are now grouped and ordered daily from the most recent to the oldest.

A cached memory system has now been introduced which, every time an event is modified or created, empties the cache and updates the iCal file for the next time the event is requested – giving more dynamism to the changes.

We hope that you will find these changes of use.

Improvements in the META tags editor

An efficient indexing process in search engines requires using META tags correctly.
META tags are sets of information invisible for the web page reader, but accessible for search engines like Google, where the content of the page is defined precisely in order to improve indexing.

We can, for instance, define the title of the page, a description or an abstract and the key words that identify the page best when we want the search engines to take them into account, as well as the language or when it was last modified.

It is important for each of the pages of a web site to have different META tags, as it wouldn’t make sense if all of them had, say, the same description; this is why search engines apply penalties to web sites where all pages have the same META tags or where the key words contained in the META tags are not related to the content.

After this week’s update, we have improved the META tags editor of the Homepage service by adding user options like rating, classification and review, and automatically incorporating existing information like date and language.

We have released an easy way to let Google know more about your website. With this new feature, all pages of your website will be analyzed by Google in a given frequency. This also will help Google to deal with the multi-language websites and then obtaining better indexing results.

Ab�Core platform migration successfully completed

Iwith.org’s Ab�Core integrated services platform has been migrated to CentOS released by Linux. This migration has been accomplished in the frame of our continuous efforts to operate servers with the most innovative technologies. CentOS release version by Linux has a very solid performance.

Events: Calendar View

We have implemented an option allowing you to view upcoming events in Calendar mode and to browse through it.
You can access the calendar view down at events or clicking at events date. In the first option you will access directly the actual date, in the second, the event date.

There are different configuration options; for example, the initial view to be the month, or the week…or the week starting Monday or Sunday, different time schedules in the day, etc. You can configure all this options through Management-> Service Setup-> Calendar.

iCal format support in the Events service

As of now, your users, friends and stakeholders can synchronize their agendas with those of your organization and therefore not miss any event.

We have incorporated iCal format support to the Envents service, allowing exporting of all the events from a calendar to a standard format. At the bottom of the event service page, in a small but clearly visible way, you will be able to localize the link that will allow you to download the file. In some programs like SunBird (Mozilla’s calendar manager), can be indicated directly to the calendar’s URL.

This improvement is aimed to offer, very soon, a visualization in way of calendar of events, using standard tools that support this format.

Moreover, in this update there have been added the following:

News: look in headlines. Now it also does it in news marked as “alllanguages”
Album: Snippet Slide, solving problem that did not allow thevisualization of sub-albums.
News: Added a link to quick access to RSSfeed
News: Error in internal texts
Album: Optimizing the internal management of the Snippets.

�Events� service improved

We are working on the events service to make it compatible with iCal standards.

Thus, we have added more information to the event, so that calendars can soon be exported to events management programs. The information we have added is:

Geographical position of the event (latitude and longitude), allowing its reflection on a map (with a Google Maps keyword)
Length of the event, expressed in number of weeks, days, hours and minutes.
Colour of calendar, so that we may visually distinguish different calendars in the system.

After the Ab�Core 3.0 publication, we have focused on two main objectives: solve the problems, errors, and inconveniences generated by the new version as they came up or were reported by the users, and improve the utility and functions of some services. Welcome to Ab�core 3.0

We are proud to show you the result of a great effort that we are sure you will like: Ab�core's version 3.0.

Mainly, we have restructured Ab�core's kernel. This reorganization allows an easier way to manage services and packs. We have introduced new elements that will allow a quick and dynamic programming.

Among others, the new issues you can find in this new Ab�core are:

Events service: new feature, possibility to define a form to register in an event. Example.
Links service: new service to manage links in your website
Showroom service: now you can organize projects in categories. Example.
Album service: a new way to browse your pictures in Flash mode. Example.
Newsletter service: improvements reducing the risk to be marked as SPAM
Usage: a new administration's menu, in "Statistics", to know usage level of each service. Example.
Database pack: this is a pack just for developers aiming to extend Ab�Core capabilities with their own database applications.

There are other improvements that are not visible. This new kernel means:

faster creation of new applications and functionalities
less programming errors
visual and functional coherence of applications

Eventually, we have done lots of little improvements in almost every service and we have fixed some little bugs.

Upgrade of Anti-Spam filters

The new version improves the behavior and detection of SPAM mails with attached graphic files.

Campus updated to Moodle 1.6.3+

Just a note to let you know that we have now upgraded the Moodle-based virtual campus to version 1.63+
The new version has a number of improvements over the previous one, and a special effort has been made to convert all contents to UTF-8 codifications.
In order to make this migration possible, some internal components have also been updated, like the Mysql Database server and PHP.
We hope the migration has been made without much trouble for your organization.

Ab�core�s error correction.

In recent days we have solved some minor problems:

Events Service: Presentational error in a lengthy article about an event.
Events Service: Corrected an open “div”� html tag that was producing a script error at the bottom of the page.
News Service: Names and contact details of the persons who do not belong to the organization are not shown.
Newsletter Service: The language option is not required in the user subscription form to the newsletter.

�At the moment we are working on the improvement of the Kernel. We expect that in 3 weeks we will be able to update the lastest version, and it will allow us to develop new applications more efficiently.

Improvements in Stakeholders and google maps services

Stakeholders service has been improved becoming more flexible and able to manage a great number of categories and stakeholders in an easy and quick way.

Besides, we have included the service Google Maps, which allows defining a stakeholder’s Latitude and Longitude in order to situate it on a map.
